Natural gas vs. propane: which one should you choose?

While electricity has been the energy source par excellence in Quebec for quite some time now, natural gas and propane have been gaining ground. Their sources, uses, storage methods and costs offer their fair share of advantages.

However, you’ll need to see a comparison between natural gas and propane to choose the option that works best for you, according to your wants, needs and budgetary considerations.

propane vs gaz naturel

Natural gas vs. propane: availability and uses

Since the seventies, natural gas has been lauded for its comfort, stability and ease of installation. With a simple connection to the municipal distribution network, you’re good to go! However, not every municipality has a natural gas distribution network. Propane, on the other hand, comes from a tank installed outside of the building. As a result, you can use it anywhere.

You won’t notice any significant difference in the way natural gas and propane are used. Both forms of energy meet the same needs: heating systems, refrigerators, pool heaters, patio heaters, generators, water heaters, barbecues, fireplaces, stoves and ovens.

Natural gas vs. propane: installation, safety and price

As we’ve seen, it’s easy to have natural gas installed…as long as you live in the city! However, if you live in the country, that’s another story. Therefore, unless your municipality has a natural gas supply network, propane is a better choice.

When it comes to safety, both of these sources of energy are combustible, flammable gasses, which you must handle with care. In the event of a leak, natural gas tends to accumulate near the ceiling, as it’s a light gas, unlike propane, which is heavier and therefore accumulates near the floor. Whether you choose natural gas or propane, the risks are virtually non-existent as long as you use and maintain your equipment properly. The installation of a propane tank is subject to strict regulations in order to ensure everyone’s safety.

Now, let’s talk about money. The cost of propane depends on the region, as well as the current price of petroleum. Why? Because propane is a product of the oil refining process; therefore, the prices are directly related. However, the fact that there are various propane sources and suppliers tends to keep prices competitive.

If you’re already using one of the two sources of energy, the cost of conversion will undoubtedly be relatively high. If you want to switch from electric heating to gas heating, you should be aware that, if natural gas has only recently reached your neighborhood, homeowners and business owners who use it will have to pay a share of the costs of installing the pipeline. The further the gas main is from your building, the higher the costs will be. As for propane, you’ll have the option of leasing or purchasing your tank, whichever way works best for you. Therefore, for a new user, propane is often a more affordable option when it comes to installation.

What about the environmental impacts?

Both propane and natural gas are so-called “clean burning” fuels. They do emit some pollutants, but not as much as other fossil fuels. Another thing to consider is that no trucks or boats are required to transport natural gas. For the most part, it travels through underground or underwater pipelines. On the other hand, its primary component is methane, a well-known greenhouse gas. As for propane, it’s clean both before and after burning. It’s also non-toxic, so it won’t contaminate the water or soil in the event of a spill.
